Community Service Day
June 21, 2007

Thank you!
RochesterCares was delighted to help coordinate this day of community service for PricewaterhouseCoopers. Corporate volunteer programs are a wonderful opportunity for companies to showcase their committment to community and volunteer service. We hope that each of the hands-on projects provided a rewarding and fun volunteer experience, and gave volunteers a good introduction to these agencies and the services they provide in our community. Participation in these service projects help our agency partners better utilize their time and resources. They could not do their important and impactful work without the support of individual and corporate volunteers like PwC. On behalf of RochesterCares, Foodlink, Hillside, Special Olympics, and the City Of Rochester, A HUGE THANK YOU to our many volunteer friends at PricewaterhouseCoopers!

About RochesterCares
RochesterCares, Inc. is an emerging affiliate of the national Hands On Network, an organization committed to building bridges between volunteers and agencies. Our goal is to make an impact in the Greater Rochester community by connecting the needs of our agency partners with a diverse network of volunteers. RochesterCares works with several nonprofit agencies to develop engaging service projects, and helps to foster partnerships between corporations and service agencies. We also provide civic-minded leadership training, and promote episodic volunteerism with our online calendar of hands-on service projects. RochesterCares is an all-volunteer run organization, and we would therefore like to thank all of the Team Coordinators who helped make this day possible: Amy Lok, Mary Hanlon, Dany Galbiati, Kristin Dezen, Misha Goldfeder, Susan Mack, and Linda Lok.

In the morning, about 15 volunteers sorted through salvage, and repackaged these grocery items for redistribution to service agencies. Foodlink relies heavily on the kindness of volunteer groups to help their small staff go through all the donations they receive daily. As the foodbank for these regions, Foodlink works with area food retailers, manufacturers and wholesalers to acquire, sort, store and redistribute food to our member charity programs – especially soup kitchens, shelters and emergency food pantries. In addition, Foodlink also provides food to hundreds of non-emergency programs like group homes, day cares, senior centers and camps. Their goal is to help programs save vital dollars on their food budget. These savings can then be redirected to other programs that help meet the emotional, physical and spiritual needs of their clients.

The Hillside Children's Center needed some help with landscaping at their Monroe Ave and Lehigh Station campuses. There were 25 volunteers at each site, which proved to be a huge help to the Hillside staff of only three people. Projects included clearing out flower beds, mulching, weeding, and planting. With so many volunteers on hand, it was great to get a few week's worth of work done in just 3 short hours!

This 20-person team worked furiously to organize the storage space at the Special Olympics office. Volunteers spent the morning assembling shelves, and sorting through hundreds of donated sports uniforms and a variety of sports-related equipment. This project has been on the Special Olympics to-do list for a couple of years, and they were thrilled with the results! The Special Olympics of Genessee Valley very recently participated in the State Games in Albany, and will soon be expanding their services to all of Western NY, and plans to host State Games here in Rochester in the very near future.

After a wonderful lunch at the park, all of the PwC volunteers came together to comb the long stretch of Durand Eastman Beach for trash, debris, and driftwood. The Parks & Recreation Dept. of the City of Rochester has only 3 people to help maintain this beach all summer long, so they were very excited to have the help. What a wonderful & environmentally-friendly project in celebration of the first day of summer!
